Aims and objectives
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem,
with a high rate of complications and expense.
CKD is defined as abnormalities of renal structure or function present for 3 months.
The term comprises a group of pathologies,
being a progressive and irreversible syndrome that begins asymptomatically,
leads to renal dysfunction,
and results finally in renal failure.
It is a common condition,
though is potentially treatable if diagnosed early.
The degree of renal fibrosis predicts...
Methods and materials
This wasan observational,
Patients with age of 18 years-old or older,
who underwent native kidney biopsy for evaluation of glomerulopathy or progressive renal failure between July 2017 and March 2018 were recruited.
Pregnant women as well as patients with active infection,
abdominal tumors or lithiasis were excluded. After informed consent,
laboratory and biopsy data were obtained,
and the imaging study was performed. Ultrasound...
Nineteen patients were recruited,
with an average age of 40.4 ± 13.4 years,
12 of which were male,
corresponding to 63.2% of the sample. The average length of the right kidney in its longitudinal,
transverse and anterior-posterior diameters were 108 x 55 x 52 mm,
while the left kidney´s were 106 x 50 x 53 in the same axes.
The average cortical thickness of the right kidney was 16 mm and the left kidney 17 mm.
The distance to the skin of the right kidney was 43 mm while the left kidney was 41...
No correlation was found between ARFI measurements and mild renal fibrosis demonstrated by percutaneous biopsy.
This finding is similar to that of the liver,
where ultrasound elastography is not a useful tool to differentiate normal tissue from mild fibrosis,
but it is able to differentiate the absence of fibrosis or mild fibrosis (F0-F1) from moderate to severe fibrosis.
(F3-F4) (1) . These results are consistent with some studies that have not shown that the evaluation with ARFI of diseased...
