Aims and objectives
The aortic root is the initial part of the aorta,
composed by the sinuses of Valsalva and the aortic valve leaflets,
and is demarcated by the aortic annulus from the left ventricle and by the sino-tubular junction from the tubular ascending aorta (1,2). Ascending aortic aneurysm is a major cause of morbidity and mortality,
including aortic dissection,
and heart failure secondary to aortic regurgitation.
Aortic root dilatation can be idiopathic or associated with congenital...
Methods and materials
Patient population: 101 consecutive patients with a TTE and a cardiac CT performed within 6 months were included from February 2012 to September 2014. Patients with bicuspid aorta,
aortic valve prosthesis or a surgical aortic conduit were excluded. TTE: TTE Images were acquired during breath-hold in the parasternal long-axis view.
Aortic root diameter were measured at end-diastole using the leading edge-to-leading edge convention using a high-quality commercially available ultrasound system....
Demographic data: Of all 101 patients the mean age was 59 years,
range 19 to 85 years.
62 of them were men with a mean age 57,8±15,6 years and 39 were women with a mean age 60,8±14,1 years. Variability of CT measurements: Interobserver correlation between the cardiovascular radiologist and the resident was excellent (>0,92; p<0,001) for every type of measurement and method. Intraobserver correlation between the two methods as measured by the resident was also excellent for all CT...
ECG-gated Cardiac CT is commonly used in daily practice for ruling out coronary disease,
but it can also be used for measuring the aortic root since it includes the initial ascending aorta. CT measurements of the aortic root showed excellent reproducibility despite different levels of observer expertise,
even when performed on independent reconstructions from the axial dataset. Recently,
CT and MR measurements of the aortic root have been proposed but without a clear definition of their...
