To describe the characteristics of the idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIP) according to the updated classification by the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society in 2013. To recognize the radiologic pattern of each IIP and the terminology used in reporting radiologic images. To distiguish the usual interstitial pneumonia pattern from other IIP patterns as the most critical role of the radiologist.
The idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIP) are a group of fibrosing and inflamatory pulmonary conditions. The American Thoracic Society-European Respiratory Society classification of IIP,
defines the morphologic patterns on which clinical-radiologic-pathologic diagnosis is based. Fig. 1 IIPs include eightentities with several imaging features: Morphologic pattern Imaging Features Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) Basal,

Typical HRCT morphologic patterns are associated with the IIPs,and radiologist play an important role in diagnosis and characterization. Basal and peripheral predominant reticular pattern with honeycombing and traction bronchiectasis characterizes UIP and may be diagnostic in the appropriate clinical context. Basal and peripheral or peribronchovascular ground glass opacity with or without reticular pattern with subpleural sparing characterizes NSIP. The evaluation of all the combined...
