With this educational poster the authors' objectives were: to define aortic aneurysm; to classify aortic aneurysm according to their location and morphology; to inform about specific measurements and findings that should be included in the CT/MR angiography report because of their utility to plan the treatment by the vascular surgeon; to propose a standardized CT/MR report.
AORTIC ANEURYSMS 1.
Definition Aortic aneurysm is an abnormal and pathologic dilatation of the aorta. 2.
Classification Aortic aneurysms should be classified according to both their location and morphology. In terms of location,
they are primarily divided into thoracic aorta aneurysms or abdominal aortic aneurysms.
The diameter thresholds for diagnosing an aortic aneurysm depends mostly on its location but also on the gender,
age and body surface area of the patient and different thresholds...
Findings and procedure details
both CT and MR angiography are excellent methods for evaluation of aortic aneurysms.
In our hospital,
the vast majority of aortic aneurysms are evaluated by CT angiography. The purpose of this subsection is not torecommend ourspecific protocol of image acquisition but rather to share some useful advice for a successful examination. Our standard protocol of aortic artery aneurysms includes an acquisition in an early arterial phase.
This early arterial phase is triggered...
Aortic aneurysms are dilatations of the aorta that,
when their diameter increases above certain thresholds (according to their location),
are treated surgically (either via endovascular or open approaches). The first step to a successful and complications-free surgical treatment is a good pre-operative planning.
either CT or MR angiography,
play the main role in this planning.
radiologists should be familiar with thissubject and with the specific measurements that...
