The purpose of this academic exhibition in to present a pactical radiological approach in the diagnosis of primary osteosarcomas,
stating the imaging findings that allow differentiation between the different histological subtypes.
The diagnosis of osteosarcoma relies on a combination of imaging and histopathological characteristics,
which play a crucial role in the classification and staging of the tumor. Treatment and prognosis vary greatly according to those properties of the tumor,
so the two diagnostic methods yield information that directly influences the survival of thepatients.
Findings and procedure details
Osteosarcomas are malignant tumors of connective tissue producing osteoid matrix,
and varying amounts of fibrous tissue and cartilaginous matrix.
They are the most commonprimary bone tumors in children and adolescents and the second most common primary malignancy of bone,
after multiple myeloma. Osteosarcomas are classified according totheir degree of differentiation,
their location in the bone,
and histological type. The various imaging modalities yield information that is essential for the...
An understanding of the imaging characteristics of the different subtypes of primary osteosarcoma is essential in the correct diagnosis of these tumors.
Such understanding, together with an adequate histopathological correlation,
allows timely and optimum treatment that will improve the prognosis and survival of these patients. 2.The various imaging modalities yield information that is essential for the planning of surgery on these lesions,
for the assessment of responses to medical...
