Submitting and managing schedule change requests in our residency program has historically been completed using a paper-based system requiring in-person submission and long term storage of large volumes of completed request forms.
This system contains inherent inefficiencies for both residents and program administrators,

Methods and materials
Through the use of online Google applications,
the existing paper based scheduling request forms were converted into an electronic Google Form which automatically populated a Google Sheets spreadsheet optimized for efficient display of relevant data to chief residents and program administrators to facilitate rapid review,
and implementation of schedule requests.

Using a 5 point rating system,
the convenience rating of request submissions increased from a mean of 3.51 (n=29) with the paper system to a mean of 4.61 (n=28) with the electronic system (p<0.005).
Ease of off-site submission increased from 1.83 (n=29) with the paper system to a mean of 4.6 (n=28) with the electronic system (p<0.005).
Overall resident satisfaction increased from a mean of 3.17 with the paper system to a mean of 4.64 with the electronic system (p<0.005).
The use of electronic tools for resident scheduling requests leads to a significant increase in resident satisfaction and convenience ratings as well as improved workflow efficiency for chief residents and program administrators.
The ability of changing schedules and call shifts while away from the primary hospital site was also significantly improved.
