To describe MR staging criteria for tumour extension and adjacent organ involvement in patients with cervical cancer.
The staging variables were compared with the FIGO´s criteria.
MR is recommended for pre-operative assessment of local tumor extent and depht in patients with FIGO stage IB or greater after histological confirmation.
Cervical cancer is characterized by a higher signal intensity disrupting the cervical stroma,
which has a lower intensity. It is the method of choice for local staging to determinate degrees of infiltration,
involvement of adjacent structures and it´s considered the best imaging modality to planning therapy and following up. MR...

Pictorial essay with retrospective evaluation of 47 subjects in the period June 2009 - May 2010.
Relative frequencies were established for each FIGO´s stage based on MRI findings.
The criteria for local staging in uterine cervical cancer depends on the depth of parametrial invasion,
extension to the vagina and periorganic involvement.
It reliably can be demonstrated in MR with high resolution technique,
with excellent anatomical detail.
