The whole breast ultrasound (WBUS),
in addition to mammograms,
has demonstrated value for the breast cancer detection (1,2).
is a time consuming,
operator dependent procedure,
which limits its use.
In the current study,
we evaluate the performance of an automated free hand ultrasound mapping and annotating system (FHUMS) for the WBUS.
Methods and Materials
Two experienced breast radiologists,
scanned and interpreted the images in 4 large chicken breast phantoms,
with a total of 25 implanted targets,
ranging from 3 to 5 mm in size,
to simulate small breast tumors.
A SonoScape SSI-1000 ultrasound machine (Shenzhen,
China) with a 10 MHz linear transducer interfaced with the automated freehand mapping and annotating system (FHUMS) from Metritrack LLC (Hillside,
USA) were used.

A total of 24 out of 25 targets were detected using the freehand breast ultrasound with manual annotations (FHBUS) protocol and all the 25 targets were detected in the video images with the FHUMS.
The target detected in the FHUMS video acquisition mode only,
was not included in the statistical analysis.
The average scanning time with FHBUS and FHUMS in the video mode were 11 min.

With the FHUMS in the frame and video acquisition modes,
The WBUS in phantoms,
with the FHUMS in the video acquisition mode,
shows a target detection rate slightly better than the FHBUS.
Significant time reduction was obtained with the FHUMS in the single frame and video acquisition modes.
The real target to nipple distance can be measured with the FHUMS and it is underestimated with the commonly used radius measurements.
Excellent correlation was found among the 3 measurement methods for all the outcomes of the targets detected.
