CT is increasingly used to examine extremities,
due to its superiority over plain radiographs. To date,
to the best of our knowledge,
only one study has studied the effective dose (ED) in musculoskeletal CT of the extremities .
In that study the average dose-length-product (DLP) was 359 mGy∙cm.

Methods and Materials
All patients who underwent postoperative CT after ACL reconstruction in 2011-2012 were included retrospectively. The radiation dose information was extracted from the automated dose report attached to every CT examination.
This report is archived with the CT images in our PACS system.
The dose report includes the volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) (Fig.1,2)[2,3]. The CT dose index ( CTDI) is a measurement of the average dose in each slice.

We included 190 patients,
of which 71 female,
and 119 male.
The age ranged between 14 to 64 years.
The mean was 29 years,
and the median 26 years. The DLP in these examinations varied from 55 to 205 mGy∙cm.The mean and median were 84 mGy∙cm. The mean and median ED liberally calculated were 0.84 mSv,
ranging from 0.55 to 2.05 mSv. The mean and the median ED conservatively calculated were 1.7 mSv,
ranging from 1.1 to 4.1 mSv. The ED for chest radiograph (two views) is estimated to 0.12 mSv.
The calculated effective dose in patients who underwent post-operative CT after ACL reconstruction surgery varied from 0.55 to 4.1 mSv.
This was higher than previously reported but lower than other CT examinations.
CT imaging should be used judiciously,
especially in young patients.
