Aims and objectives
Atherosclerotic plaque present within the carotid artery is a major risk factor for stroke (Fig.1) (Hermus,
To assess the risk of stroke from carotid atherosclerotic disease,
the current standard is to measure the severity of luminal stenosis.
due to the uncertainty in patient management for high-grade asymptomatic stensosis and the failure of stenosis to characterize risk from lesions that do not compromise the lumen,
better strategies for...
Methods and materials
Twelve patients with more than 30% carotid stenosis identified by ultrasound underwent both DCE-MR and DCE-US.
Three subjects eliminated from this sample due to excessive MRI motion artifact in two cases and very low ultrasound images quality due to obesity in one case.
Here I will elaborate the method used for each modality,
followed by the correlation method:
1.1: DCE-MRI Protocol
The magnetic resonance imaging session takes up to an hour.
The patients have...
We have acquired interpretable images from 9 patients.
The results show 8 out of the 9 cases correlate in the level of enahancement.
The correlation measured between the (High/Low) avereged EI(plaque)/EI(lumen) dB-enhancement of microbubble values versus the mean of Ktrans of the plaques perfusion MRI.
The statistical values: Using Spearman Rank Correlation:
Number of points = 9
Spearman r = 0.6614 (corrected for ties)
The present study provides preliminary evidence to suggest that intraplaque neovascularisation detected by DCE-US is associated with its presence in established method using DCE-MRI Kinetic Modelling.
this correlation is not quite significant.
If larger sample proove more significance,
that will introduce higher flexibility for potential clinical application of the two modalities.
